WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

Working with good people. People is all about what we do, from design (starting on a restaurant napkin) and developing the project with our employees into a finished project. I love the magnitude of the building and projects and participating in everything from start to finish, concept to completion. There is a whole team involved from start to finish, and being a part of that is the most exciting part of my role. I love that I’ve been able to grow with the company, and the success is always exciting. I’ve been able to ride the ups and down of the business and look forward to what the future brings.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

Initially, I needed a job. Coming out of university, it was an easy transition joining Scott Builders, where I started with steel construction. From there, I moved into Estimating, where I continued to evolve and grow my career. Over the years I developed a passion for the business development side of the business, which has kept me happily in the industry for years.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

I love soccer, and used to play a lot and coach. When I’m not hard at work or playing or watching soccer, you can find me running (about 4 or 5 times a week), camping, and travelling. I take any opportunity to explore our beautiful province in my camper.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

As I reflect on my career, I was greatly influenced by Zelensky. I’ve always admired how he stands his ground and his ability to pivot and adjust to the current circumstances.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

I have two main quotes or philosophies I live by:

Work: “To earn our customer’s unequivocal commitment to do business with us again.”

Personal: “If you don’t believe in coincidence you are not paying attention.”

Both have served me well over my life and have guided my actions over the years.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

Scott Builders has enabled me the freedom to pursue individual goals, company goals, and offer great work-life balance and flexibility. This company allows me to meet challenges, solving client problems through creative solutions, giving clients a unique and tailored experience.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

My father was a drywaller and was raised in the industry. Helping with framing, I really enjoyed the building and creating aspects of the trade. Going into architectural tech, allowed me to create and challenge myself, and I still very much enjoy seeing the end products of our hard work.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

I love spending time with family and being in the great outdoors. I enjoy skiing (Nordic and downhill), biking, golf, and travel to Europe whenever I can! I also love flying and building RC planes in my spare time.

Additionally I thoroughly enjoy keeping up with the latest technology in sustainability and am on the Passive House Alberta Board.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

David Morrison, retired GM from Edmonton, mentored me early in my career, letting me grow as a person and pursue my own opportunities and challenges. He guided me along when I needed, and allowing me to learn from my mistakes.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

“Move or die”, as harsh as it sounds, I believe you need to keep moving and exercising to stay young! Also never take your health for granted and live everyday as if it is your last.

      BRAD

      ROLE

      Project Manager, Pre-Construction Services.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

It is the team that brings it all together for me. If you don’t enjoy the people you work with, you won’t enjoy your job very much. Scott Builders is a company that follows through with the promises of work-life balance; they understand and respect the give-and-take both a business and personal life require. Scott Builders shows care for their people, the well-being of our families, and the community around us.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

Starting in my family’s business pointed me down the construction industry career path. I started by getting my electrician apprenticeship and growing in my role in the business. From there I expanded to learn estimating and design-build scopes, and I realized I enjoyed the pre-construction phase of projects. Rounding out my skillset over the years with Scott Builders, I’ve embraced my current role as Project Manager for Pre-Construction.

I thoroughly enjoy the early stages of the projects, estimating, customer relations, and working with the team to improve our processes. Working with the team to identify potential risks and utilize early mitigation practices along the way makes every project different and drives my desire to stay in this industry.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

When I’m not working, you can usually find me with my family. Coaching my kids in all their athletic endeavours and regularly travelling to BC to visit with family. I also enjoy running and am currently training to run a ½ marathon this year.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

My father and uncle, whom I worked with within the family business. They showed me that when you work hard, results will follow. They taught me to always be ready to grow and expand your skillset, and you’ll be better equipped to overcome any issue that comes your way.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

“Lead by example!” I consistently try to inspire those around me and work collaboratively to reach common goals. I truly believe you can not ask others to do something you are not willing to do yourself.

        BILL

        ROLE

        Estimator for the Calgary office.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

The smaller office atmosphere is a great mix of different people. I love the variety and diversity of experience across the team. It helps to keep everything fresh. I find the atmosphere at Scott Builders is lot more relaxed, making it very enjoyable coming to work. Our office has a great group of people working here, they are very knowledgeable, and everyone is willing to help.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

My dad had his own construction company, and I was always helping in any way I could. I went to university after high school and found I kept going back to construction. After several years in the industry, I went back to college in my early 30s to support my career as an estimator. I love the industry. There is always something different to work with. There is never a dull moment, and I enjoy the new challenges or outlooks encountered regularly.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

When I am not working, you can find me on the golf course, spending time with friends and family, and travelling with my wife.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

Definitely, my parents. They have always been there for me. They instilled a great work ethic and taught me that hard work pays off.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

“You don’t lose if you get knocked down, you lose if you stay down.” I’ve learned over my life and career that there are lots of ups and downs. I believe that no matter what comes your way, it’s important to keep going and moving forward, nothing is permanent.

          ROLE

          Estimating Manager, Red Deer Branch

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

One of the many things I love about being part of the Scott Builders Team is that every day presents new and exciting challenges. By far, Scott Builders is the most exciting organization I’ve worked for. Additionally, the team is great to work with. Each member is respectful and supportive, so it is a pleasure to come to work every day.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

I was initially drawn to the industry because my father was in construction. As a kid, I remember standing outside the fence at any construction site around the city (Red Deer), and would watch in fascination as teams would build their projects. From watching additional floors get added to the Telus building to watching the old 45th Street overpass be built, and then later come down, I’ve always loved construction. Pursuing a career in construction only felt natural for me. As I advanced in my career, I had the opportunity to work on the same projects my father did before me. This passion has continued through the duration of my career. As I’ve watched the City of Red Deer grow, I am proud to have had a hand in it, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

When I’m not hard at work, you can find me spending time with my wife of 41 years, Anita, my 4 boys, and my 12 grandchildren. In addition to spending as much time as possible with my family, I love camping, golfing, and playing cards with friends.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

I have had a lot of individuals who have helped shape me into the person I am. Unfortunately, my parents died before I was 30, so to name one person who was there for the majority of my life, it would be my father-in-law. His faith and work ethic left a lasting impact on me, and I’ve always appreciated how he was always there for me.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

Listen, take a deep breath, and think before you speak.  Never make major decisions in life when you are upset or angry. In my life, taking a moment to breathe has always helped me diffuse a situation and make rational decisions.
