WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

I have to say the culture is my favourite part about being a member of the Scott Builders Team. As the team has grown and changed over the years each member of the team has come together to work through challenges with resilience and teamwork. This dynamic not only makes for a great team to work with on a daily basis but allows us to truly enjoy coming together to build great projects. Additionally, Scott Builders fosters an environment of work/life balance and seeks out input on branch/company targets, enabling the team to work hard to achieve both personal and company goals.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

I’ve been immersed in construction growing up. In grade 12 I managed and built a garage addition for my dad and really enjoyed the experience. I took RAP in grade 12 to try apprenticeship and enjoyed it, seemed to fit my outlook of learning. As my career developed, I truly enjoyed the industry and people I apprenticed/worked for. At the time I enjoyed the field work and the changing hours. As I’ve grown in my career I’ve embraced the ever-changing landscape and love new learnings each day. With the variability of the industry, materials, people, etc. I am continually challenged to think out of the box to ensure success and contribution. I take great satisfaction in client happiness making their vision a reality while actively participating in achieving success throughout and at the end of the job. I have developed so many great relationships and friendships along the way, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, and I look forward to seeing where the next 10 years take me.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

You can find me spending quality time with my family. I have 2 children that are 4 and 2, and nothing brings me greater joy than spending time reliving my childhood and life through their eyes. My son often says “Dad I want to get big like you and go to work” and I respond “no you don’t son- stay little and enjoy the ride”, I am so grateful I get to be a part of their journey. In addition to spending time with my family, I am an avid hunter from big game to gophers and birds. I can also be found in my mancave admiring my passion through photos and mounts of the wall that tell the story of my adventures. In the summer I also enjoy golfing, camping and spending time out on the SXS with family and friends.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

As I reflect over my life, my grandfather truly stands out as someone who has left a long-lasting impact on my life and who I’ve admired greatly. He has always been there to guide and support me through life, and we always had a great bond. He was also there to share my passions and hobbies with and taught me how hunt and golf. He has helped shape the man I am today and has guided me through life lessons which has stayed with me to this day.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

I don’t like to take life too seriously. One quote that makes me chuckle is “I don’t mean to brag, but I put together a puzzle in 1 day when the box said 2-4 years” – while it always gives me a laugh, it also resonates with my belief that life is complicated enough, no matter what I’m working on I try not to overcomplicate things and keep moving forward.

    DERRICK

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

I love being part of the Scott Builders team. As a medium-sized team, I take great satisfaction in being a part of all projects that come through the door. I am also grateful for the opportunity to know and work with every member of the team. We have a family-minded culture in our office, making me look forward to coming to work every day.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

I was born into construction. The industry is all I’ve known, and I’ve loved it my whole life. The ability to see something go from a sketch on a napkin turned into a design to the final product never gets old. Following graduation from SAIT, I joined my family-run construction company, which focused on design-build industrial and commercial projects. Starting my career at a small construction company allowed me to learn all aspects of the industry, from estimating, sales and value engineering to project management. This experience helped set me up for success in the industry and my role at Scott Builders.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

When I’m not hard at work, you can find me outside mostly. I love hunting, hiking, and taking every opportunity possible to spend time with my kids.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

I hold a great deal of admiration for my two older brothers. They’ve always been there for me as support, advisors, and confidants. They’ve supported me both professionally and personally as I’ve grown into the man I am today.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

“Team first, Self second!” I firmly believe that if you take care of your team, they’ll take care of you. Whether in business, family, or recreational, I put my team first, ensuring they feel valued, supported, and appreciated. In turn, they’re always there for me, providing support when it’s time to focus on my own growth.

It is like you are part of a family, and the culture is amazing! Everyone looks out for each other. If there is an issue, there is always someone you can talk to at all levels. I work diligently to make sure this culture is consistent throughout the office and ensure all those under me are aware and know I’m there for support.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

I come from a construction family. I started working summers initially and saw the growing need for trade teams. In 1993 decided to go that route and got my journeyman ticket in 1997. Not only was this great for my career it was an excellent opportunity for my family. I have found there are always new things to learn, and the industry is constantly evolving. I love that each day brings something different to the table.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

When I’m not working, you can find me spending time with my friends and family.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

My family, my wife and 3 kids (2 daughters and 1 son). I’ve learned so much from being a husband and father. No matter what happens, my family offers new perspectives and helps keep me grounded.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

“Treat people the way you want to be treated.” Not only are these words that guide my day-to-day, but they’re also definitely part of the culture at Scott Builders.

Patrick is the General Manager in Edmonton. Patrick is the type of manager who believes in empowering people and that his job is to be there whenever he is needed, helping his staff to grow, and supporting them wherever necessary. PATRICK

        ROLE

        General Manager, Edmonton

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

The People! We are all good people, and have chosen a challenging industry to work in. We all strive to overcome any obstacles together and in our way to ensure the successful completion of our projects. Rallying together and leveraging all our strengths makes for a team I am proud to be a part of.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

Construction I believe is one of the most challenging industries to be in – I love the strategy of it and the problem-solving. There is never a dull moment with new challenges to tackle, and different ways to improve what we produce. I love how it all comes together at the end of the project, when you have something tangible to see.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

I have two very active kids and love coaching them in all of their endeavours, be it hockey, ringette, softball, baseball, or basketball. When I have the time, I can be seen on the golf course trying to strengthen my game or reading all types of genres of books.

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

My university basketball coach had a really strong code of ethics and did not waver in anything. He had rules and if you broke them there were penalties, I.e. if you were late for practice, you’d miss a game. This left a lasting impact and to this day, I’m habitually early to things.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

“What goes around, comes around.” How you treat people will eventually come back to you in one way or another. In the construction industry, you can come across all different types of people, and no matter what, I always try to treat others with respect and consideration.

          MICHAEL

          ROLE

          General Manager for Calgary

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

Scott Builders has allowed me to grow personally and professionally in a safe and nurturing environment. I love that at Scott Builders, all team members are treated with respect, and everyone is valued.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

I was initially drawn to the construction industry through a sense of accomplishment in creating something great. I don’t consider myself an artistic person, so being a part of building helps me feel creative. I’ve stayed in the industry due to the ongoing satisfaction and pride felt when a construction project is complete. The opportunities I’ve encountered and the ability to grow within the industry have helped shape who I am as a General Manager. I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned, the ability to understand the various aspects of construction, and the ongoing opportunity to learn and grow as the industry continues to evolve.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

When I’m not working, my goal is not to be found! I love spending time outdoors – backcountry skiing, cross-country skiing, hunting, hiking, and enjoying all that western Canada offers. I love getting away from it all!

SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? (OR YOUR HERO)

My dad has been a great source of inspiration in my life. He helped instill a sense of exploration and wonder in me. He always encouraged me to get out and explore and to not wait around for someone else to be available, that if you want to do something just go and do it. My wife is also an inspiration to me and our family. Her dedication to her goals and our family helps keep everything in perspective. I’m also incredibly proud of my two daughters, who kick butt and take names. They are confident and fun to be around, which as a Dad, is wonderful to see.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

One of my main mantras is “get out there!” – which applies to all facets of life. Often it can be easy for us to get stuck or stand by waiting for the right timing or opportunity. I firmly believe if you are inspired or have a goal, get out there and do it!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF THE SCOTT BUILDERS TEAM?

One thing I appreciate most about being part of the Scott Builders team is the encouragement and support given to grow within your career. As the teams grow and change, Scott Builders always provides opportunity to advance within the organization before recruiting externally. The second reason I love being part of the team is the people and the culture. I’ve had the pleasure of working with and getting to know the team over the last 10 years, and the relationships built make it easy to come to work every day. The focus on work/life balance and healthy personal and professional development has helped foster a thriving team dynamic where everyone has opportunity to excel in their careers.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

My family owned a home inspection company, so growing up I had always wanted to follow that path in some way. I started my career as a sprinkler fitter with the understanding that the construction industry was growing within Alberta. It seemed like a natural fit for me after high school. As I’ve advanced in my career, I have loved the challenges and opportunities to learn something new every day. The ability to work with my team and continually offer innovative and practical solutions to our clients has kept me happily in the construction industry.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

When I’m not hard at work you can find me with my family, and my 4 year old daughter. During the summer, you can find me on the golf course with friends, or enjoying being outside.

The previous GM in Edmonton, Hubert, left a lasting impact on me both professionally and personally. He really disseminated the value of hard work overall vs the day to day. He was a pleasure to work with and his mentorship encouraged my career growth and helped me realize the importance of outlining personal and professional goals and putting the work in to achieve them.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY: (FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LIFE PHILOSOPHY)

I love the atmosphere and company culture that comes with being a member of the Scott Builders Team. The company has always supported their employees and actively promotes flexibility, understanding of family life, and work-life balance across all roles.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY & WHAT MADE YOU STAY?

I distinctly remember walking by a construction site when I was in high school and thought it seemed really interesting. This curiosity drove my decision to attend college, which further fed my interest. Estimating was my favourite course and where I excelled the most. Also, and interesting enough, I found out that my grandmother was an estimator as well.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT HARD AT WORK, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

When I’m not working away on a project, you can find me at home with my family or camping every chance we get in the summer. During the winter months, I love my Peloton and enjoy the outlet exercise gives me.
